Children & Teens

Children & Teenagers

Children & teenagers grow rapidly, and lead very busy lives. Packed schedules, school pressures and increasing time spent on screens can overload their nervous system. Chiropractic ensures a reduction in nervous system stress, allowing the body to grow and thrive with comfort. Paediatric chiropractic techniques are very gentle and quite different from those used with adults. Treatment is tailored to each child’s age, development and individual needs.

Below are some of the common conditions frequently seen in our practice, however our care extends well beyond those listed. We encourage you to enquire with our front desk as to whether chiropractic may the right health care modality for your child.

High Stress, Tantrums, Hyperactivity, Anxiety

  • Children today often face busy schedules, school pressures and increasing time spent on screens, all of which can contribute to physical tension and nervous system wind-up. This increase in stress may present in ways such as tantrums, hyperactivity, anxiety etc.
  • Chiropractic care supports healthy spinal function, reducing stress within the system. This allows their body to regulate, adapt and heal better, and more comfortably.

Poor Sleep & Fatigue / Burnout

  • Quality sleep is essential for healthy brain development, nervous system regulation, recovery, and overall wellbeing. When children and teens experience restless sleep, ongoing fatigue or burnout, it may reflect challenges with nervous system regulation.
  • Chiropractic care aims to restore balance to the autonomic nervous system (Sympathetic “fight / flight”) and (Parasympathetic “rest / digest”) so that your child can shift with ease between states of alertness and deep rest.

Posture

  • Children and teenagers are spending extended periods of time at desks, looking at screens, wearing heavy backpacks and meeting the demands of sport and activity.
  • When these stressors become too much for a young body to handle, they can influence posture, spinal function and nervous system regulation.
  • Our chiropractors assess spinal alignment, posture, mobility, coordination and balance to locate these areas of stress. Gentle adjustments are given to support healthy nervous system communication, optimal movement, and the natural growth and development of the spine during these important stages of life.

Scoliosis & Spinal Development

  • Scoliosis is a three-dimensional change in the growth and development of the spine, resulting in a lateral curve. The results of this curvature on spinal structure also affects the nervous system due to their close connection.
  • Early assessment and chiropractic adjustments during childhood and adolescence is extremely important. The spine undergoes significant growth before reaching skeletal maturity, making this an important window to address movement patterns, spinal mobility, posture, and overall function.
  • X-ray analysis is an important tool in analysing the severity of curvature, locating areas of highest stress and performing the most accurate chiropractic adjustments. Beginning care early can help support children and teens as they grow, adapt, and move through these important developmental years.

Sensory Disturbances

  • Sensory sensitivities can make everyday activities more challenging. From discomfort with certain clothing to struggling to sit still for extended periods of time, your child may not be receiving the appropriate sensory information from body to brain, resulting in sensory disturbance & discomfort.
  • The spine plays an important role in providing proprioception (body position sense) and other sensory input to the brain. Research demonstrates that spinal adjustments can alter this sensori-motor integration and proprioceptive function. By improving the information going from spine to brain, chiropractic care aims to support a more efficient and accurate communication system within the nervous system.

Immune Function; recurrent respiratory & ear infections, allergies, hay fever, asthma

  • Children’s immune systems are constantly adapting as they grow, with optimal nervous system function playing an important role in coordinating immune responses. Stress on the developing spine and nervous system may influence the body’s ability to regulate inflammation and respond appropriately to environmental challenges.
  • Our goal is to help children build a healthier, more adaptable nervous system so they can thrive as they grow.
